There are many theories of how the Pokémon universe came to be, how it works and what Pokémon are. Well, we on the PokéBlog team have come up with our own theory... THE POKÉPOCALYPSE!
It seems like in the cute and cuddly world of Pokémon, with it's adorable creatures and adventures that always turn out right, absolutely nothing could go wrong. Well, maybe this world is the aftereffect of a horrific event. A nuclear apocalypse.
Several years before Ash and the other young trainers we see in the show and games were born, there was a war. A nuclear war. We investigated the places in Pokémon based on places in the real world. There are many locations we see, such as Lumiose City, that are very similar to, if not based on, real places. Places that could have been involved in this war.
In the case of Lumiose, take a look at Prism Tower or the gym in the heart of the city, it is almost identical to the Eiffel tower. This got us thinking. What if the tower is an attempt after this nuclear war to rebuild this important landmark?
There are several instances of modern or even futuristic looking versions of famous land marks or places that appear within the game and/or tv-show. We've indentified a few recreations of landmarks and places from Asia and Europe, more specifically Japan and France. So, we decided that for our theory to work, this war was between an alternate Asia and Europe. This would explain these famous landmarks being rebuilt in deserts or small towns.
Still, we have not yet answered what Pokémon are. Many Pokémon are very similar, if not identical, to animals we have in the real world. And the few animals we do see are domestic like the occasional dog or household bird, like a canary. These animals are animals that could have been snuck into or kept in nuclear shelters. However, all the wild animals who didn't have this good fortune were subject to fallout radiation. This caused dramatic changes in their body chemistry that mutated them in to the lovable creatures known as Pokémon. We see Pokémon that resemble zebras, and we see other Pokémon that resemble tigers. The nuclear bombs obviously had effects that, while stronger in the places like Europe and Asia, also affected a place much like Africa, and affected animals specific to that continent.
Then we get into the idea of Pokémon that are not animals but objects like Banette, a doll who was thrown away, forever holding a grudge. Well, radiation can do some crazy things. Who knows if long exposure could cause a doll to be brought to life as, well, every child's nightmare. We're not going to get too far into this because we're just bloggers, not scientists.
We also thought of the many ghost Pokémon that were humans in their past lives, human/Pokémon transformations and, of course, Lavender Town. This type of Pokémon, like Yamask, which are fairly common, are basically dead humans. We didn't want to stretch the theory to people coming back to life but perhaps people who apparently died in the bombings were, in fact, transformed by radiation. Pokémon like Kadabra are another thing. Kadabra or Kadabra-boy, his prior Pokémon state, suffered from genetic mutation from what we once again feel is radiation. And then we come to Lavender Town, probably the creepiest thing in the Pokémon world. All the dead coming back to life and the ghost appearances made me think of...you guessed it...radiation. Perhaps Lavender Town was the target of an actual bombing, which would explain all the mourners and ghosts. Only a few were able to evacuate and even fewer able to survive. The population and size of Lavender Town is small and is probably made up of the people, and their families, too sad to leave behind their homes. Radation could also explain the odd purple coloration of Lavender Town.
